2004 CASS LAKE RESULTS

Mike Cornwall with his first 50-inch muskie and the 2004 Cass Lake Tournament winner.

The 2004 Cass Lake Muskie Tournament once again lived up to its reputation at a "big fish" event. The competitors enjoyed clear skies, light winds, and mild temperatures throughout the entire tournament. In all, 50 teams caught 14 legal-sized muskies with several heavy fish in the 50-inch class taking top honors.

As usual, Saturday morning had produced half of the tournament's muskies by 10:00am, with a 50-inch fish topping the list. As the action halted on Cass, the big muskies started biting on Pike Bay in the afternoon. By day's end, Pike Bay had produced three of the top five muskies in the tournament. The 2004 Cass Lake Muskie Tournament champions are Clayton Fletcher and Mike Cornwall. These two have logged countless tournament hours on Cass, so their winning 50-1/2" muskie was more than just blind luck. The fish was taken first thing Sunday morning on an 8-foot deep mid-lake flat using a jackpot. The timing could not have been better for Mike to catch his first 50-inch muskie.

Stacy Bultman and Al Emilson took second place with a 50-inch fish that fell for a Salmo jerkbait. With only a handful of boats on Pike Bay, it was surprising that the third place muskie was caught in the same area as the second place fish, and only an hour later. Kris Nater and Eric Nelson caught that 49-7/8" muskie on a shallow flat using a Grey Ghost jerkbait on Saturday afternoon.

The fourth place team was Sah-Kah-Tay Resort owner, Larry Beaver, and his partner Paul Young. They connected with a 48-7/8" muskie early on Saturday. This fish was taken on a Lindy Tiger Tube on a seldom fished mid-lake sand flat. Bob Carney, Sr. and Bob Carney, Jr. rounded out the top five by catching a beautiful 48-1/4" muskie on Pike Bay on a homemade black bucktail that was fished deep and slow.
