The 5th annual 2004 Mille Lacs Muskie Tournament gave the lake fair representation by producing some very impressive muskies, including the event's largest ever - a 53-incher. A large cold front moved into the region Friday night, so most of the tournament was fished in 60-degree temperatures, heavily overcast skies, high humidity, with sporadic rain and lightning. Boat control was also a challenge Saturday, with south winds to 20 mph kicking up 2 to 3-1/2-foot waves in the Indian Point and Big Point areas. Despite the challenging conditions, 14 teams landed 16 qualifying muskies and pike including three between 51 and 53 inches in length. The 2004 Mille Lacs Muskie Tournament champions were Eric Nelson and Jason Hamernick, a muskie fishing guide on the big lake. The team got on the board with a 43-1/2" muskie caught Saturday in the Big Point area. The pair then shot into first place Sunday morning when Jason landed a hefty 51-inch muskie in Vineland Bay. This fish inhaled a Bulldawg that was worked slowly along the bay's deep cabbage weed edge. The second place team of Erik and Dave Jacobson set the Mille Lacs Muskie Tournament record for the largest release in the event's 5-year history. Erik caught this 53-inch muskie casting a Holcombe Tackle Stomper to the top of a rock bar only 5 feet deep. The fish was blind in one eye and not as heavily built as the 53-inch muskie he caught the week before while pre-fishing. Chuck Laitinen and Dean Allie took 3rd place with a 51-1/4" muskie caught Saturday near Big Point. This fish was also taken on a Holcombe Tackle lure - the Low Rider - from a small isolated cabbage weed bed on the east side of the lake. The fourth place team of Chris Seanger and Rick Miscinski were the first to truly concentrate on Mille Lacs trophy pike opportunities. It paid off with a pair of 41-inch northerns - the first time two pike were entered by any team in a Minnesota Muskie Tournament. These fish were both taken while slow-rolling spinnerbaits along the deep weed edge in Isle Bay. Fifth place went to Ryan Erhard and Travis Frank for their 48-1/8" muskie they caught on a spinnerbait in the shallows near the mouth of the Rum River.
Third place was won by Chuck Laitinen and Dean Allie with this 51-1/2" muskie 2004 MILLE LACS MUSKIE TOURNAMENT RESULTS
