Spring 2005 MMTT Muskie Stocking Program

White Bear Lake received a boost in its muskie population on May 21, 2005, thanks to the Minnesota Muskie Expo and the Minnesota Muskie Tournaments. 176 three-year-old muskies were released at the city landing in front of a crowd of spectators and volunteers. The average muskie size was a whopping 28.4" with fish ranging in size from 26 - 33 inches in length. This large size ensures that nearly all fish survive as they are too large to be targeted by the lake's fish and birds.

This project involved George Wahl of the Minnesota Muskie Expo hiring and paying a commercial angler to drag a 1000 ft. seine net through a the 10-acre pond operated by Paul Hartman and the Minnesota Muskie Guides Association. Sixteen volunteers were on hand to deploy the net, drag it in, and transfer the muskies into holding pens. The MN DNR then transported these fish to their new home in White Bear Lake, where many will go on to attain trophy proportions. The value of these fish is $5000, bringing the total to $26,000 worth of muskies that the Minnesota Muskie Tournaments have stocked locally over the past 8 years.

In June, 8000 muskie fry will be restocked into the pond and are scheduled to be harvested for stocking this fall as 11 - 13" fingerlings. Forage for the fingerlings is purchased with proceeds from the Minnesota Muskie Tournaments in conjunction with Frankies Live Bait and Marine.

We extend a very special thank you to the volunteers who helped to make this a successful event: George Wahl of MN Muskie Expo, Brad Coyne, Kevin Dickinson, Brett Ericksen, Tim & Libby Hoene, Greg Ide, Chris Jensen, Tom Kenefick, Wayne Klemz, Jeff Riedemann, Luke Ronnestrand, Ken Seaman, Chris Swentkofske, Kevin Zollinger, Dean, Jon Vinje, and CO Doyle of the MN DNR.
